Unaccompanied Minors in Europe

Project

Faced with the growing issue of exploitation of unaccompanied minors by organized crime networks, the Just Child project produced a series of practical recommendations to improve child protection systems and ensure that the rights of minors are upheld in criminal proceedings — whether they are offenders, victims, or witnesses.

The Just Child project, coordinated by the French National School for the Judiciary (ENM) in partnership with 10 European institutions, officially concluded with a final seminar held on May 15–16, 2025, at the ENM’s Paris campus. Supported by the French Ministry of Justice, the French Bar School (EFB), and funded by the European Commission, this European initiative focused on strengthening the protection of unaccompanied minors across Europe.

The final conference followed two earlier seminars held at the National School for the Protection of Juvenile Justice in Roubaix and the Scuola Superiore della Magistratura in Naples. It gathered judges, lawyers, investigators, and educators from Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Romania, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Albania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina to share experiences and best practices.

Adding an artistic and human dimension to the event, Fiammetta Ghedini created a live graphic recording throughout the final seminar. Her real-time drawings captured the discussions and emotions of the participants, transforming the key messages and insights of the conference into powerful and accessible visual narratives.

This unique approach helped bridge research, policy, and communication — making the complex topic of juvenile justice and child protection in Europe more visible and engaging for a wider audience.
