Growing Together – A Shared Journey from the NICU to Now

This 25-pages comic tells the story of two families with experiences of preterm birth, cerebral palsy and ADHD.Our heroes are preemie adults Sophia and Adam and their families. Told through their parents’ eyes, we discover moments in their lives since they bonded in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and learn about support networks based in the care of teachers and the guidance of medical experts.This story aims to help families to understand how life might look when a child is born too soon and serves as a tool for health professionals to facilitate discussions with caregivers.Read the whole comic here:

PREMSTEM is a research project funded by the European Union’s prestigious Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The PREMSTEM team is a collective of world leading clinicians, researchers, stakeholder advocacy groups and an industrial partner with well-established experience in neonatology and drug development, developing a new regenerative stem cell therapy to repair the brain damage caused by premature birth, also known as encephalopathy of prematurity (EOP).
Artist
Maddalena is an Italian illustrator and graphic designer, living between Livorno and Paris.
After studying at the Fine Arts Academy in Florence, she became a freelance illustrator and worked with many clients, from the fashion industry to scientific magazines to editorial illustration and children books.
She created the official illustrations for Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Ball tour, and illustrations for Brandon Maxwell’s collection for the New York Fashion Week 2015 and 2016. She also works for Verdissima as pattern designer, and for Vespa Piaggio as illustrator and painter.
She works since 2016 for Cancer World magazine and Sharing Progress in Cancer Care as editorial illustrator and graphic recorder.
